Way to Practice Sight Words

Happy Sunday!  I hope everyone had a terrific weekend and that all the dads had a wonderful Father's Day.  I promised to share fun, educational activities for the students to do this summer. I found some great ideas for practicing sight words on another teacher's blog.  Since I included a list of sight words we worked on this year in most of the students report card envelopes, I would like to share some of those ideas here with you and some that I have come up with myself.

1.  Have your child jump rope and spell his/her sights words.

2.  Write the sight words on a beach ball with a permanent marker.  Then have your child read the sight word his/her hand is touching.

3.  Have your child write his/her sight words in sand or have someone else write the words in the sand and have the child read the word.  You can write the words in sand at the beach or place some sand in a cookie sheet and pretend you are at the beach.

4.  Write each sight word on a sticky note.  Place the sticky notes all over a wall or different places in a room.  Say a sight word and have your child shine a light on that word.

5.  Print a few of the sight words using a white crayon (not a washable crayon because it won't work) on paper.  Then have your child paint over the paper with water colors.  The sight words will magically appear.  Have your child read the sight words.

6.  Using sidewalk chalk, let your child write the sight words all over the driveway.  Then have your child read the words.

I hope you get a chance to try some of these ways to practice sight words this summer.  If you have come up with some other fun ways to practice sight words, please leave a comment here and share your idea with other parents.
