A Week in October

Hi Everyone,

I took some pictures of the students working at centers last week.  I would love to share them with you.

Here is what the students have been busy doing last week:

Making words with playdough

Lacing Fall Shapes

Making a Letter R - Reggie Rooster

Playing "Find the Candy Corn" (One student hides the candy corn and another student guesses what number it is under, until he/she finds the picture.)

Matching numbers to sets of dots

Making numbers with pattern blocks

Thank you for stopping by for a visit to our classroom.  Stay tuned for pictures from our field trip to Gust Brothers Farm on Thursday.  I hope to share them with you next weekend.

Reading to Your Child

I hope all of you had a wonderful Wednesday.  I have found a terrific article that tells about things you can do when reading aloud to your child.  These are all very powerful.  I believe that if you take 10 or 20 minutes a day to read aloud to your child and do these things, your child can be successful at school.  Please take the time to read this.

Thank you for stopping by Lake Ontario's blog.

A Peek at Week #4

Welcome to Week 4 in Lake Ontario!

The students in Lake Ontario are having one amazing week after another.  Almost everyone is able to find what center he/she needs to go to, with just a little help from Mrs. Pizzo or myself.  Week 4 found me finishing up some assessments with students at my directive table and looking around the room at students who were on task and working.  I couldn't be more proud of  this class.

Here are some highlights of centers from week #4:

Putting together a brand new Chicka Chicka Boom Boom puzzle.
(Thank you to all of the parents who ordered books from our last Scholastic order.  Because of your orders, I was able to get an extra $15 which allowed me to "buy" the puzzle for our class.)

Using homemade playdough (courtesy of Mr. Lattea) to make the names of all of the students in our classroom.

Sorting letters on the pocket chart

The Power of the Clipboard

The students love doing the "Write the Room" center.  They attach a paper to the clip board.  Then walk around the room to find "hidden" pictures.  When they find a picture, they write the word or beginning sound or a letter.

Thank you for visiting our classroom this week.

Our 3rd Week of School

Who can believe that we have finished the 3rd week of the school year?  It has been a terrific beginning of the year.  I wanted to share some pictures of the centers the students did last week.

Playing a matching game using environmental print.

On the computer, using the Starfall website.

Sorting letters that are in different fonts.

Using the Magnadoodle to practice printing letters.

Sorting pictures, letters and words.

Last Monday was Constitution Day.  We celebrated by reading a book called "We The People" and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.  Then the students made badges that said "I Can Recite The Pledge of Allegiance".

Here are some pictures of them with their badges.

Thank you for taking the the time to see what we did in Lake Ontario last week.  I hope you enjoyed your visit.

Things To Do While Reading Aloud to Your Child

Hi Everyone,

I hope that you are have a wonderful summer!  My family has had an exciting week.  My oldest turned 18 (I swear he was just in kindergarten, I'm pretty sure I blinked and he turned 18) on Tuesday.  Birthdays in our house tend to last for at least a week, so we are still celebrating.

I found a terrific (short) article about what to do when reading aloud to your child.  There are some excellent ideas.  Click on the link below the picture to read the article.

Keep relaxing this summer!  And don't forget to READ!

Ideas for a Literacy Filled Summer

Happy July Everyone!

I hope all of you had a terrific 4th of July holiday!  Mine was filled with food, family and fun.  Who could ask for anything more?  I have a link to share with you today.  It has ideas about how to keep your kids reading during the summer.  It is from one of my favorite places to visit in Chicago, Open Books.  It is a used book store that uses its profits to provide tutoring programs for students in the Chicago Public Schools.  Here is the link.  Check it out.

Keep reading and try to stay cool!

A Great Website!

Happy Sunday Night!

I hope everyone has had a great weekend.  I wanted to take this time to share a great website that I just found.  It is called Reading Teacher.  There are flashcards to print out, along with books your child can read.  There are also on-line lessons for your child to listen to.  Please take the time to check it out this summer.

Have a great week!
